Hiawatha
Published in Paperback by Steck-Vaughn Company (June, 1993)
Authors: Roger Brooke and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Average review score:

Always a joy! To be savored over and over!
Hiawatha is a beautiful, richly detailed poem of Native Americans before the treahery of the white man overwhelmed their way of life. Susan Jeffers took each verse and created a breathtaking, artist's view of the young Hiawatha. Each verse becomes vibrantly alive with her delicate rendiions."By the shores of ..." and Nokomis fill the readers souls with new images because of the renderings made by the talented Susan Jeffers.

A captivating, emotional charge. Beautiful!
Susan Jeffers' drawings exemplify the clarity and imagination of Longfellow's epic poem to a tee. A must have for every child's library, hopefully to be read over and over again.

A childhood classic comes alive
I have this poem memorized because my father recited it to me so many times as a child. This illustrated version has beautiful pictures that capture the fact that this is the story of child and embody the lyric quality of Longfellows poem.

Jake's Orphan

Author: Peggy Brooke

One of the best books i have ever read
I think this book was the greates book i have ever read. You can not put down the book.
it is about a boy named tree (because he does not know his own name) lives at the orphange for the first 12 years of his life. He went to live with mr., mrs., and jake gunderson. mr gunderson does not like tree because he is not like his own son gus. mr gunderson acts like tree is not a good boy. so he thinks tree is the worst "son" that a preson could ever have.
When tree was about to go back to the orphange, his little brother acron comes along.
I can not tell you the rest of the story because it might ruin the ending but i really recomend that you should read this book.
DO you think Tree and his little brother will find a home with the gonderson, ro not. If you want to find out what happenes read the book

Great Story!
Jake's Orphan was a excellent book! I'm 15 years old and idon't read every book that comes across like my sister. But this bookwas a great book i was HOOKED to it! I couldn't put it down! I couldread this book over and over and never get tired of it!

Universal Story
Peggy Brooke has created a story for children and young adultsthat people of all ages will enjoy for its true to life emotions andrelationships. The book is true to the time, true to the circumstances, and unlike so many literary efforts, concludes with a sense of closure that is at once poignant, but also very believable. The story is set in 1926, but the historical setting shouldn't throw readers disinterested in period fiction. Its themes are timeless and could speak very well to today's youth about the power of peer pressure, the value of hard work and family, and the beauty of selfless acts of love. I was most impressed by Peggy Brooke's ability to realistically portray the gut-wrenching struggles of conscience within her main character, Tree, and his sheer terror at the possibility of his brother destroying everything he has worked so hard to attain. Just as young people today might feel trapped by circumstance and worry there is no way out of a predicament, Tree's struggle illustrates there are always alternatives, always a chance for redemption.

Queen of the head-hunters: the autobiography of H. H. the Hon. Sylvia Lady Brooke, Ranee of Sarawak
Published in Unknown Binding by Sidgwick & Jackson ()
Author: Sylvia Leonora (Brett) Brooke
Average review score:

Brooke Bonded
A rare story of a women truly in love her husband and partner in life. A man who had other girlfriends up until his 87th year and discussed them with his wife. Secure in her position with him, she was happy for him to have them - only golddiggers, nymphomaniacs and bores excepted. It is an inspiring love story for its apparent lack of anger or jealously on her part. No one made her laugh the way, he, Vyner did.

Brooke Bonded
Briefly, Sylvia Brooke loved her husband, Vyner. Vyner had many girlfriends and discussed them with her. The only one's she did not want near him were golddiggers, nymphomaniancs or bores. The rest she was happy enough with. None ever displaced her as a key woman and friend in his life. He romanced up to the age of 87, apparently. Judging by her account of their life together, there is an almost incredible lack of anger or jealously on her part. And an acceptance of the man he was. A majority of women would have opted to depart from him and pine away for every. She did not take that road. They loved and laughed together.
For those who advocate more than one partner in life, such as those in the polyamory movement, there will be few life stories better than this to inspire them. This life story rings true and one would love to know more.
The Hon. Sylvia Lady Brooke came from the upper classes, economically or socially speaking. In human terms, also, she was a class apart and inspiring. There is, surely, a lesson here on how to deal with our need for human, emotional and sexual variety. This book is out of print. It should be reprinted.

Interesting and endearing
this book is witty, witty, witty, beautiful language and insightful. I couldn't put it down.

Rupert Brooke: The Complete Poems
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (January, 1977)
Author: Rupert Brooke
Average review score:

a poet... that is "for ever England".
I happened upon the poetry of Rupert Brooke in an old old (truly ancient) used bookstore in a serene corner of Vancouver Island... something about this aged, sepia-colored, hardcover beauty of a book made me feel it had been abandoned by someone else and left there especially for me to find. The rest of the day I was on the beach with it, and each new page further convinced me that I had stumbled upon greatness. Each phrase carried a thoughtful hush along with it, and I felt that to breathe was an interruption. Time and time again I have been brought back to the poetry of Brooke, and this collection has become one of my treasures. Someone abandoned it for me to find, and yet it has become something I would run back into a burning house to retrieve.

These are brief poems about love and longing, doubts, serenity, nature and goodness, frivolity, victory and jealousy, and stirring wartime sonnets that express a noble idealism in the face of death. These latter are grouped under the author's title of "1914" and are his most well-known series, perhaps not only because of their perfection, but also because of their prophetic nature. Brooke lived a brief but eventful life (1887-1915). With the outbreak of World War I he was commissioned in England's Royal Navy, and took part in a disastrous expedition at Antwerp which ended in retreat. At the age of 27, he died from blood-poisoning on board a French hospital ship off the coast of Skyros, Greece. He was buried at night, by torchlight, in an olive grove about a mile inland. Reportedly, if you go there you will find a little wooden cross with just his name and the date of his birth and his death marked on it in black. The fifth poem (entitled The Soldier) in Brooke's sonnet sequence begins... "If I should die, think only this of me: That there's some corner of a foreign field that is for ever England."

Essential!!
This book changed my life. Brooke is one of the most gifted writers I have ever read, not to mention my favorite. You will be hard pressed to find anything closer to eloquent, raw emotion on paper. "Love," "Jealousy," and "Success" are particularly notable. I would be happy to discuss more with anyone: e-mail me@bridgetsamuels.com

Brooke is phenomenal!
I first picked up this book in my local library when I was in high school at the tail-end of the 1980s. It totally changed my life. I knew I was a poet/writer from an early age, but reading Rupert Brooke's work really inspired me to dig deeper within myself and be a better writer. With the exception of Dylan Thomas and William Blake, Brooke was the one writer I admired above all others. I have carried this book around with me for the past13 years, and whenever I need inspiration I read his poems. Although I don't find all of them to my taste, there are some that stand out above all others, most notably "The Call", "The Voice", "Success" and "Ambarvalia" - some of these are incredible mystic poems that inspired a lot of my simliar work. I would advise anyone interested in the war era poets, or just darn good poetry, to look this one up. It's awesome.

Signs of Life: A Memoir of Dying and Discovery
Published in Hardcover by Times Books (March, 1997)
Author: Tim Brookes

Going Beyond the Limits of Medicine
Tim Brookes offers a well written, engaging account of the dying and death process. My father was diagnosed with a brain tumor a few weeks ago and a dear friend put this book in my hands. It is a tribute to life and dignity in dying. As I write this we are still in the middle of searching for treatment and I find the words of this book comforting and a guide of sorts to the process of living, essentially with a death sentence. The author shines a light on a process we are all engaged in, as we all eventually face the dying process. This book would be helpful for family members as well as professionls...and not only those dealing with cancer.

An uplifting book on a difficult subject
When my grandmother was diagnosed terminally ill(suffering from COPD), the family chose hospice care instead of a nursing home. I went to the library to get a book on hospice and this is the book that carried me through the heartbreaking yet beautiful last week of my beloved Nany's life. I know that every dying experience is different, but there were similarities between the author's mother and my grandmother's. It gave me great comfort to read Mr. Brookes words as I sat beside my grandmother's bedside. Many thanks for putting into words what my family and I were observing and feeling.

A journey towards life through the experience of death
Tim Brookes very eloquently voiced some of my own thoughts, feelings and struggles as I experienced my mother's death from cancer 2 months ago. It is a time of great intimacy and discovery about the very meaning of life. Our culture's beliefs and fears around death are interwoven with his very personal story, which he shares with great poignancy. This book is NOT a downer but a tribute to life. It is HIGHLY recommended for everyone, as death is a part of everyone's life

A Wonderful Window on Towson
A marvelous collection of photos and captions that provides a unique view of how the Towson, Maryland area has evolved and grown over the decades. Thoughtfully chosen details reveal the warm historical character of the region, and I expect that casual readers and researchers alike will find resonances with the history of their own hometowns and families, even if they are only discovering Towson for the very first time.

The AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION FAMILY COOKBOOK : GOOD FOOD THAT'S GOOD FOR YOU
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (January, 1999)
Author: Brooke Dojny
Average review score:

Excellent Book, Bad Title
You can't tell from the title of this book just how good it is. It features excellent nutritional advice, smart tips, and recipes that include old standards and new stuff for curious gourmets.

As someone trying to control her intake of cholesterol and fat as well as lose weight, this book is a fantastic springboard of ideas and suggestions. Newcomers will find explanations for more exotic names and ingredients, and old pros will learn tips on how to make their favorite dishes healthier. And those of us watching our weight will find caloric and nutritional breakdowns.

My only complaint would be that you have to do a little math to figure out how much a serving is. This isn't too hard to do, though.

Very recommended!!

Great recipes, great variety
This has become my favorite of the dozens of cookbooks I own. My family and I have enjoyed very much every one of the recipes I've tried -- I haven't come across a single dud yet!

The recipes also include very complete nutrition information, which is helpful for those watching what they eat.

I can't recommend this highly enough!

Outstanding
A miraculous three-quarters of the recipes I've tried from this book have been keepers. The authors have somehow managed to avoid the pitfall of trying to make palatable meals out of skim milk and celery. Instead, they have chosen dishes that at their best do not rely on unhealthy ingredients. Butter, cheese, and the like do appear in some recipes, in moderate amounts, just enough to prevent feeling that there's something missing. Among the best of the book: Fennel and prosciutto risotto, Bulgur taboule, Butternut squash soup, Minted couscous salad, Fiery pork tenderloin, and a gingery won ton soup that will be in heavy rotation at our house for years to come.

Great Food
I am a gourmet cook who was looking for some steady, healthy recipes. I have been pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. All of the recipes I have tried have been very good. There is very good variety and the recipes are easy. Bon Appetit!
